Hardcore Zen: Punk Rock, Monster Movies, & the Truth about Reality – Video & Text Review

So what in the world do Zen, hardcore punk rock, and Japanese monster movies have in common? Well for one, they have Brad Warner.

Hello Dudes, this is Jim from EnlightenmnetDudes.com and this is our review of Hardcore Zen: Punk Rock, Monster Movies, & the Truth about Reality.

Keep in mind, Enlightenment Dudes isn’t a traditional Zen web site. But our next author isn’t exactly a traditional Soto Zen priest either.

A number of our website subscribers recommended we review this book and I must admit I was reluctant at first, but I am now sure glad I did. Brad Warner has lived a fascinating life. He was very much involved in the wild punk rock scene that came out of Oho in the early 80’s. The early parts of this book feature some masterful story telling on his part as he describe the ups and downs of struggling musicians and some great early transcendental perceptions on his part.

After his music career, Brad lived in Japan and worked on some of those crazy monster movies and shows many of us remember from when we were kids. I laughed out-loud when he described, in detail what it was like to be stuck in one of those monster outfits during a filming. Brad also tried his hand at writing some episodes and he artfully describe some of the interesting cultural differences between westerners and Japanese.

Although Brad had become interested in Zen while a student in college it seems his practice and dedication really took off while in Japan. This interest culminated in him receiving “transmission” while living in Japan. Warner is refreshingly honest about Zen, enlightenment and anything else this book covers. The reader isn’t going to find a lot of preachy talk about 8 fold paths and various precepts here. This is down to earth stuff and very well done.

I also wanted to say that this is a great book to give to spouses, girlfriends, or other people who may not be into this stuff. Brad does a great job of explaining some of the basic concepts on the road to awakening and he does it while spinning a very compelling narrative.
With that in mind, we here at enlightenmentdudes.com give Hardcore Zen: Punk Rock, Monster Movies, & the Truth about Reality
an 8 out of 10 on our infinity scale, which means this book is both entertaining and helpful, and a book you should really go pick up.
